Prevention is...an active process of creating conditions and personal attributes that promote the well-being of people--Lofquist, 1983
There are several frameworks and theoretical models for prevention planning that reflect current technology and best practices. A comprehensive and effective approach has in it a vision, a set of guiding principles, and a combination of proven and promising strategises that target individuals, familes, peers, schools, and community environment.
Presently, prevention is about a combination of evidence-based practices, strategies, and programming that are directed by Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) planning process. The SPF is a process for doing prevention. SPF gives us a new agreement of understanding on how we operate in prevention.
CRCA is involved in community environmental strategies.
A child is walking along the beach with friends and sees a thousand starfish washed upon the shore. The child stops every so often and throws a starfish back into the ocean.
One of her friends comments, “Why bother, there are so many of them, you can’t save them all, do you really think you are making a difference.”
The child responds, Well, it made a difference to the one I just threw back”
Let’s keep AOD prevention where it is needed, in our communities with our children and families.

The field of prevention is an exciting and wonderful place in which to make a difference in the lives of people and their communities.
Because prevention continually evolves there are new opportunities to learn, grow and discover. This makes prevention an art in which we get to help paint the picture by adding our own interests, creativity, passion, and talents.
It is also an ever evolving science that requires continual professional development, assessment of effectiveness, and application of principles that can make a difference.
Prevention is like the indicators on your dash board, they are rarely seen until the prevention efforts of adding fuel, oil and water to your car is ignore.
